How to apply for this qualification from the Natural Healthcare College

.

Entry requirements

The course may suit people wanting to embark on a career in complementary and alternative medicine, or for existing practitioners who wish to gain a qualification in Naturopathic Nutritional Therapy.

No previous complementary therapy skills are required. As this course is set at a standard equivalent to Level 5 of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (Foundation Degree Level), a good standard of education is required, or equivalent work-related experience.

A good knowledge of English language and comprehension is expected and required. Students must be able to communicate to the standard equivalent to Level 7 of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). If English isn’t your first language, please be aware that the standard of written English required for successful completion of the course is very high. As the course progresses, students are asked to produce comprehensive case reports where they are expected to interpret technical information relevant to the case, and then produce a professional-looking document where the technical information has been explained in terms that a member of the public could be expected to understand. This is an area where many students who don’t have English as their first language have found the course quite difficult, and it has influenced their ability to successfully complete the course.

Membership of the NNA entitles our graduates to apply for registration with the General Naturopathic Council (GNC). A Naturopathic Nutritional Therapy diploma will qualify our graduates for registration with the GNC at the level of Associate Naturopath.

Study time

The entire two-stage course represents in the region of 1800 hours of study time. For Stage One Modules 1-6 each homework assignment is expected to take around 3-5 hours to complete, and approximately 4-6 hours for Stage 2 Modules 1-6 where you’ll need to demonstrate additional research over and above the extensive course notes. Some individual case study work is required. You’ll be asked to find volunteers from family members or your friends, taking a  full case history for each volunteer, assess the presenting symptoms and offer appropriate advice. Each case history will be submitted for evaluation by your tutor, who will provide feedback to you.

Attendance requirements

You’ll need to attend a minimum of 1 x two-day (10 hours) tutorial before you complete Stage One. Stage 2 Clinical Practice training requires 50 hours of tutorial attendance (please refer to the Clinical Practice page). To help increase your knowledge base, you are also expected to attend seminars run by various supplement manufacturers that are held in a number of towns and cities across the UK.

Assessment

There are no exams for this course as successful completion is dependent upon continuous assessment of your skills

How long will it take to complete the course?

The answer to that is very much dependent upon the time you have available for study. The course provides the flexibility to study to some degree at your own pace but as it is intended for students who have a serious intention to set up in practice, you’ll be expected to commit to submitting a coursework assignment every 6-8 weeks for Stage One, therefore this level of  training should take approximately 36-52 weeks depending on the time available to you. Stage Two is a structured programme which requires commitment from the start. There are regular timetabled homework submissions, compulsory tutorial dates and the course takes approximately 20 months. As students start Stage 2 together as a group, there may be a delay before you can start Stage Two after completion of Stage One.

Course Fees

The fee includes coursework modules and assessment of written homework assignments. Coursework modules are sent electronically to students via email and written homework assignments are also submitted for marking and returned to students by email.
